Rather than publishing a Senior Day article retelling the same stories we’ve been covering for four years, I have decided to take a completely different approach and not write a story at all.
Instead, I’ve decided to put the writing in the hands of the students and fans who have grown to know and love our outgoing seniors. We’re calling it “Senior Ads” - like the one’s you’d see in a yearbook - because it will empower the readers to create the content and give them one final chance to say goodbye to guys like Kyle Weaver, Derrick Low, Robbie Cowgill, Chris Henry and Jeremy Cross.
We will take the best submissions and print them in a special basketball section of the Daily Evergreen on Friday, which will be an issue you won’t want to miss. We’re even thinking about delivering some copies to the Cougar lockerroom before the game, just to make sure those guys know what they mean to all of us on the WSU campus.
If you’d like to submit an e-mail for publication, please write to: sports@dailyevergreen.com
Please keep your message clean and straight to the point. They don’t have to be short, but understand there is limited space in the print edition of the paper. Please also include your Name, Hometown, Year and Major (if applicable). We hope to hear from many of you in the coming days.
Here are the rest of our basketball notes for the day:
- A Facebook group has been started encouraging fans to wear a tie to the game to honor the seniors. Tony Bennett stated publicly that the only game he’d wear one is Senior Day, so anybody who wants to join in is encouraged. Look for more possible news on this story in the coming days … if the group creator agrees to an interview.
- Dick Bennett is expected to be in town Wednesday after traveling across the country by train. Reporters asked WSU senior Kyle Weaver if he expected one of Dick’s patented yelling sessions during practice, and the always jovial Weaver replied that he hoped so.
- Speaking of things overheard Tuesday, Robbie Cowgill explained that Dick Bennett told his players after the first week of practice in August of 2004 that Weaver would be the only one playing in the NBA. I guess the ol’ ball coach knows a thing or two, as Weaver is projected to be a late-first or early-second round pick in this June’s draft.
- Finally, the WSU team managers have contributed to Managers vs. Cancer, a charitable organization started at the University of Illinois. Items auctioned off so far include things like autographed basketballs, but in the future they might offer up a spot on the bench to help with the managing efforts. Stay tuned, it could be a great opportunity for a loyal fan and a great way to raise money for a great cause.

Thanks for mentioning the tie stuff!
I hope that group creator agrees to the interview
I did the math, and I think that would exponentially increase the number of tie wearers at the game.
