I am happy to announce that a decision has been made about Washington’s governor. Congratulations Governor Gregoire. It took us long enough. Yet for some reason, there are still people who just can’t let it go. It must be a big deal if the Republicans would go so far as to hold a demonstration in Seattle. Who would have thought that it was worth that much of a hullabaloo? For a long time I was holding firmly to the idea that the only reason the counts were so close was that no one cared. Honestly, statistically, if everyone chose randomly, and not because they actually knew something about the candidates, the results would end up pretty close to being split down the middle. But lets just assume that we actually care more deeply. What are we going to do to pacify those furious republicans? There is actually one solution that I have found to the problem at hand. It was a solution that has a firm base in history. Does anyone remember the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr? First of all, I don’t know why duels ever went out of fashion. While shooting someone may seem a little extreme, it is more civil than what many politicians are resorting to today. Now, politicians are so afraid of being in the wrong in someone’s eyes that we hardly know the difference between the two political parties, much less from one candidate to another. And these people will do anything short of, well, shooting someone, in order to win. Why not just let them duel it out? At least dueling has a set of concrete rules. With all the counting and recounting, are we really getting anything done? At least with a duel, the candidates would have a quick answer and they could move on and do their job. That’s what they are supposed to be in office for isn’t it? |
