Tsunami Relief Week raises $4,800 after two days
About 50 volunteers have put on several events in hopes of raising $50,000 for the relief efforts.

Amy Trang Daily Evergreen staff Students and the Pullman community have raised more than $4,800 for tsunami victims in south Asia after two days of Tsunami Relief Week events. The week, sponsored by about 25 university organizations, 50 volunteers have put on several events in hopes of raising $50,000 for the relief efforts. Kristine Reeves, a coordinator and adviser for the International Center and Programs, said the support from students and the community has been incredible, with donations also coming from outside Pullman, including money from ASWSU Spokane. “It’s amazing,” Reeves said. “It’s going better than we expected. The support has come from mostly students more than anyone else. They are making it happen.” The community can help the relief fund today by eating at Rico’s and Taco Del Mar. Those restaurants will donate a percentage of today’s sales to the relief fund. Taco Del Mar manager Christian Paulsen said the restaurant will be staffed more heavily today in preparation for the overflow of customers. “We’re expecting more people to come in,” Paulsen said. “We have a lot of sorority and fraternity members working here, so there is a contest going on between the houses.” Other events happening during the week include a coin drive, clothes drive and pledge tree donations. The Student Entertainment Board and Engineers Without Borders will host a benefit concert from 8 p.m. to midnight tomorrow in the CUB Ballroom. The concert features San Francisco pop-rock band Miggs, with local bands The Fury Kings and Fire Under Collision, and musician Ryan Laughlin. A donation of $5 to $10 is requested at the door. “The word is getting out; more people are becoming informed about it,” said Whitney Walters, a senior communication major. “Our bigger programs are at the end of the week. We hope the word will keep spreading and people will show up for those events.” A benefit dinner and service auction will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Gladish Community Center. Tickets cost $15 for a single student, $25 for a student couple, $20 for a single non-student, $30 for a non-student couple and $150 for a table of 8 to 10 people. Tickets can be bought from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today through Friday on Glenn Terrell Mall.

The week ends with a rummage sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the SRC. For more information, call 335-4223, or visit www.tsunamireliefweek.com
