‘Supernatural’ worth playing catch-up

Demons, an evil rabbits foot that makes you even more unlucky after you lose it, and the funniest show I’ve seen in weeks.

After watching the third episode of “Supernatural,” now in its third season, I’ve got to say I have no idea why I haven’t been watching this show since the very beginning.

“Supernatural” airs 9 p.m. Thursdays on the CW. The show is an odd blend of humor, horror and all-around creepiness that at first unsettled me and made it difficult to watch. However, after watching all of season three so far, I’ve come to love it. It focuses on the Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean, who travel around the country killing demons and having a fun time doing it.

If you’re one of those people who needs to watch seasons one and two before starting on season three, go rent or buy the first two seasons on DVD, you’ll be glad you did.

This most recent episode, titled “Bad Day at Black Rock,” was perhaps the most entertaining show I’ve ever seen. Sam and Dean come across a cursed rabbit’s foot that at first, gives Sam a lot of luck. But after it gets stolen from them, Sam’s luck goes sour and he begins to have some pretty hilarious mishaps including tripping over his own feet and skinning his knees, stepping in gum and when he tried to scrape it off the bottom of his shoe, he got his foot stuck in the drain grate and ended up losing his shoe down the sewer.

One of the best parts of this show is the relationship between Sam and Dean. They almost never get along, they have completely different styles of doing just about everything, and they argue constantly. Deep down, though, they would do anything to make sure that the other one stays alive, even if it means selling their soul to a demon, just like Dean did at the end of last season to bring Sam back to life.

Now, I haven’t seen any of Season One, and only a couple of episodes last season, so I don’t know the entire backstory, but the great part about this show is that knowing the entire backstory is not entirely necessary. This most recent episode is the first one that has confused me, and that was just because I didn’t know who one character was at the beginning, but by the end of the episode, I knew enough about him to know that he isn’t a good guy.

Also, from the few episodes I’ve seen, I’ve realized that while Sam tries his best to think everything through and go about things in a rational manner, Dean follows his desires, often spending some extra “quality” time with the first female that will have him after they’ve killed the demon of the week. This usually leads to some pretty funny looks from Sam directed at Dean.

Overall, this show is the best demon-hunting show I’ve ever seen, surpassing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” easily, because it leaves off most of the emotional turmoil that both of those shows revolved around.
