Don't count out McCain Senator from Arizona is electable, with certain conditions The Daily Evergreen Published: 11/15/2007 Last weekend, at a leadership conference put on by Young America’s Foundation, I heard one speaker – John Miller from the National Review – who gave the pros and cons of all the Republican presidential candidates. One thing he touched on was how John McCain can win the 2008 election. I found this intriguing and very possible. First, McCain must say he is only going to serve one term, and during this term, work on fixing issues in America such as the war, border control, taxes and others. If he does this, people will not question him being too old in a possible reelection in 2012. He is already in his early 70s, about the same age as when people questioned if the great President Ronald Reagan should run for reelection. Turns out Reagan did alright; he only had the guts to call the Soviet Union an “evil empire” and eventually bring an end to communism. Age will not be an issue for McCain in his first term, but he should not run for re-election. If he pushes only running for one term, he will have a much greater chance of winning this election. The other main thing McCain must do is choose a very strong running mate for vice president. The vice president must be someone prominent who can make up for the qualities that McCain lacks. He or she must be younger, and willing to run for president in the 2012 election. McCain would do as much as he could in his four years and then his vice president would take over the agenda and complete all unfinished business. A perfect example of a good running mate would be Dick Cheney for George W. Bush. Cheney had the political experience and age that Bush needed to be evened out and they made a great team, which is why American voters elected them into office. The reason this will work for McCain and not other candidates is because McCain does have a lot of support despite going up and down in the polls frequently. McCain is an American hero, and if he plays his cards right can be the one to beat Hillary in the upcoming election. He has the political experience that almost all Democratic candidates lack, as McCain has served in both the House and the Senate. Along with this political experience and being a prisoner of war, he also has good business experience. He has worked for Anheuser-Busch with the help of his wife’s father, and gained good experience in business and politics there. So don’t count John McCain out in this election. If his campaign pushes ideas such as only serving one term and addressing the problems with actual solutions, he will have a lot more going for him then some other candidates who flip-flop on issues vital to American security. McCain would never intentionally put America in the position to be hurt by a foreign power such as Iran. Can you say the same about Hillary? I didn’t think so. |
