Newspaper coverage can change, but serving our community cannot The Daily Evergreen Published: 01/07/2008 It's always nice to return to Pullman, even if I was gone for just a few weeks. Even though I am saying goodbye to a semi-healthy diet and a house without a squirrel infestation, there is a certain sense of home within these wheat fields. This past week, students from all parts of the state, country and world are converging on this small town, joining those who call this area home. Even with so many people from so many walks of life, the Palouse has a strong sense of community. At the Evergreen, it is our challenge to represent this community. We try every day within the pages of our paper and the clicks of our website. As a newspaper, our news coverage is our heart. We work to make sure that the community is informed, and that local institutions are working in the public interest. This semester, our staff will work to make sure all stories are covered. But there are always limits. It would be nice to think that the Evergreen newsroom always knows what is going on in every second of every day, but that is not the case. If there are any stories that we are missing, or if you have any suggestions to enhance our coverage, contact News editor Christina Watts at news@dailyevergreen.com or 509-335-2465. Also, if you feel our coverage was unfair or if mistakes were made, please do not hesitate to contact us. It is our policy to correct any errors immediately, and these corrections and clarifications can be found on page 2. Newspapers are no longer what they were in the past. We are working to not only provide news coverage in the papers you find in the green boxes around the area, but we are trying to be a multi-platform news information source. We have adjusted our staff and resources to enhance our web presence, and that can be seen with additional multimedia reporting and different features to showcase work from our staff. We will strive to add more videos to our coverage, which can be found at www.dailyevergreen.com/multimedia. We will also add new features to our website as the semester progresses. The first will be a separate website for the MiX section, which will be up by the end of the week to coincide with the first issue of the arts and entertainment guide. The site will take advantage of our staff and popular features such as reviews and the “Overheard in Pullman” quotes. Also, there will be additional blogs popping up on our site, with focuses on specific coverage and our editorial process. The Evergreen's Opinion section has always been the way for the community to get involved and let their voices be heard. In addition to writing guest commentaries and letters to the editor, we will attempt to solicit different viewpoints from the community, and not just those WSU-related. The public is always invited to get involved and share points of view that may not appear in our pages. To get involved with the Opinion section, contact Opinion editor Rikki King at opinion@dailyevergreen.com or at 509-335-2290. Everyone is always welcome to get involved with the Evergreen. We welcome any student who wants to get involved through being a reporter, photographer, columnist, videographer, cartoonist, etc. We welcome all years and majors. To get involved, contact myself or any of the individual section editors. We give everyone a chance. Finally, it is my personal goal to be available to anyone who wants to share their concerns, suggestions or ideas with the Evergreen. I can be reached at editor@dailyevergreen.com or 509-335-3194. Our newsroom door is open, and anyone interested is free to stop by Murrow East 122. Additionally, I will bring back the weekly “Lunch with the Editor” session. I will be available from 1-2 p.m. every Wednesday at The Bookie lounge. Everyone is invited to stop by and share their concerns. As the new editor of the Evergreen, I am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges of the semester. I hope everyone will enjoy what it brings. We will be there every step of the way. |
