Life after college Resource for graduates The Daily Evergreen Published: 03/24/2008 It’s hard to believe the semester is coming to an end. Along with the excitement graduation brings, there is also a lot of anxiety of the unknown. What are you going do after you graduate? Where are you going to work? Where will you live? The questions are endless and can be overwhelming. There are a variety of resources available on campus, but what happens when you enter the real world? Question: Are there any job search resources available to WSU alumni? Answer: If you are getting ready to graduate, I recommend taking time out of your busy schedule to use the resources provided on campus. Advisers, professors and departments like Career Services and the Student Advising and Learning Center are all available to assist you in any struggles with your career-related future. Rarely in your life will you be surrounded by as many helpful (and free) resources – take advantage of them. But if you have already left Pullman and are looking for some assistance in your job search, you have a new reference specific to WSU alumni. The WSU Alumni Association provides career support in the form of Cougar CareerBeam. According to the WSUAA website, Cougar CareerBeam “includes a job-search database, a résumé and interview resource center, and a user-friendly program that helps you determine your career goals and offers helpful steps to achieve it.” The job database has entries locally, nationally and even internationally. The resources available are comprehensive, easy to use and provide a personalized career portfolio. Best of all, the service is free to alumni. As for navigating the website, most of the features are self-explanatory, but if you prefer a more interactive style of explanation CareerBeam provides hands-on demonstrations at 5 p.m. every first Wednesday each month and at 9 a.m. every third Tuesday. There is also a video demonstration of how to use the site available. It’s good to know that regardless if you are a current student or not and on campus or not, WSU provides resources. All you have to do is log on. The bottom line is: you have to make the most of the career-related resources provided on campus. They can really help with easing the stress and ambiguity that comes with graduation. Even after you leave Pullman, WSUAA provides Cougar CareerBeam so you never have to go without career resources. |
