Charges brought for 2004 rape

Pullman police arrested a man Wednesday for alleged involvement in a stranger rape that was reported more than four years ago.

Bert M. F. Mageo, 24, was arrested by officers in Kent and faces charges of 1st degree rape for an incident in March 2004.

A then 26-year-old woman was sleeping in her apartment in the 1400 block of NE Wheatland Drive, and awoke to find a stranger on top of her, according to a Pullman police news release. The man threatened to kill her if she screamed and sexually assaulted her. The woman later escaped to a neighbor’s apartment and contacted the police.

When police arrived, the suspect had left, but fingerprint evidence was collected. Approximately four years later, the fingerprints were matched to Mageo, after he was arrested in connection with a road rage incident that occurred in Auburn in 2007.

Police contacted the victim, who now resides in Philadelphia, and then obtained no-bail arrest warrant Friday. Detectives transported Mageo and booked him into the Whitman County Jail at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

He had is initial appearance in court Wednesday and is being held on $500,000 bail.
