Obama's speeches leave something to be desired People need more than just empty words Wstetson The Daily Evergreen Published: 01/23/2009 For those of you who were hoping to read an overly pro-Obama article, I’m sorry to tell you that you are looking at the wrong column. However, for those of you who are conservative, like reading unashamed and sharp commentary, or enjoy sending angry letters, you’ve come to the right place. My duty as your humble conservative commentator is to uphold the values of truth, justice and the American way. Speaking of the American way, a time-honored national tradition took place three days ago. We have a new president. And, evidenced during the inaugural process, liberal hypocrisy has gripped the nation once more. For the past two years, the media has celebrated Barack Obama’s speeches as works of art. However, like many politicians, Obama has not written a speech in years. He has speechwriters who are paid to place carefully crafted speeches into the teleprompter. If this were an academic setting, Obama would be expelled for plagiarism. However, it is not and he is thus praised for something he did not do. Many professional orators could outshine Obama, and some of them may have the smarts to object to the overpriced inauguration. In Tuesday’s speech, Obama supported the transformation of universities. When the government spends millions for 25 minutes of airtime worth paying attention to, getting those grants to universities should be easy. In all of those secondhand words, Obama never mentioned how to pay for his plans. Yet with two years of Democrats in power, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid’s vastly liberal agenda never made it to Bush’s desk, if even just for a veto. They have no excuse for their failures to get bad, pork-laden legislation to a vote. The interviews of Obama supporters conducted on Inauguration Day had a recurring theme. For some, it was a hope for change, but for many of those educated in the ways of the American government – such as those college graduates on Wall Street – the deeper theme was a lack of substance and higher spending. The president advocated for solar power, yet never mentioned the half of the day when solar cells are worthless. He mentioned job programs, but did not mention how they will go to heavily unionized companies, where money disappears and projects are finished over time and over budget. Finally, after 20 minutes of hot air, Obama made his way to the first of many inaugural balls. The taxpayers footed the bill for security. While, as an American, I am still rooting for our new president, our country does not need words – it needs real action. As millions watched Obama’s inaugural address, the realists on Wall Street steadily made note of the president’s disdain for the free market and his lack of actual solutions. At the end of the day the Dow closed, down more than 300 points. As the president faces the realities of a high national debt and attitudes in Iran, where his posters were burned in the streets, perhaps he will take his speechwriters off speed dial and accept responsibility for his office. Until then, empty words may have to do. |
