WSU staff member publishes a ‘70s book After taking a trip down memory lane, Darryll Sherman wrote a book about growing up in the ‘70s The Daily Evergreen Published: 03/25/2009 Readers can take a trip back in time and relive the '70s with a book by WSU writer Darryll Sherman. “My '70s Book: The 'When I Was A Kid ...’ Book For The Generation That Grew Up In The 70s” is a look back at the good times in that era, said Sherman, who graduated from WSU in 1988 with a degree in architecture. He now works as a project manager for WSU Capital Planning and Development. Sherman, 49, said he got the idea for the book after spending many hours reminiscing with friends. In general conversation, people his age often talked about new technology or recent trends. “We always say, ‘when I was a kid ...’ and then talk about all the things we had or didn’t have,” he said. “The entertainment options were limited so we spent our time out riding bikes. I used to stay outside with my neighborhood friends playing until midnight. Kids just can’t do that anymore.” The book looks at what’s changed since the ‘70s and makes a humorous look at comparing and contrasting life, Sherman said. “If you had told me when I was a kid to go buy a bottle of water, I would have laughed at you,” he said. “Paying for bottled water? Now it is a multi-billion dollar industry.” Friends and family were the biggest resources when it came to writing the book, Sherman said. His peers helped him remember the fashions, trends and ways of life that existed in the decade of his youth. “There were problems in the '70s, but it was still a good time, a good life,” he said. He said the average age of his target reader is 45 to 55 years old, but other ages are welcome to read it. “It is not hard to read,” he said. “I call it a coffee table book, even though it does not have a lot of pictures. It only has 108 pages, so it is not some massive tome.” Sherman said he feels there will be interest in the book because of the revival of many things from the ‘70s, including music, TV shows and fashion. “There is a lot of interest in the era right now,” he said. “I feel like there is a a lot of people who are interested in the time and will be interested in my book.” The book was released in September and is available from online book retailers such as Amazon and www.bn.com.
