Engineering students work with wind
WSU Engineers Without Borders aim to produce green energy using wind turbine

WSU students hope to use wind to change the world.

Members of the WSU chapter of Engineers Without Borders, a nonprofit humanitarian aid group, are creating a wind turbine. The wind turbine is designed to produce green energy.

The students are using the turbine to troubleshoot and create prototypes of energy generation to be used in Third World countries and on-campus.

“We are trying to make a very cheap, reliable source of energy that won’t need a lot of maintenance,” said Wayne Chang, project lead and junior civil engineering major.

He said the energy the turbine generates could be used for a water pump filtration system or to supplement utilities used for food and shelter.

“This project could end up saving people’s lives,” said Levi Keene, EWB-WSU president and junior electrical engineering major.

He said there is always a need for new sources of electricity and renewable energy, another reason compelling the group to create the wind turbine.

“The project serves a dual purpose, Chang said. “On an international scale, it will use cost effectiveness and renewable energy to help people and save lives. On a local level, we intend to help students understand what is and is not sustainable.” He said the group may test the project at the WSU organic farm or to power computers or lights to work the bugs out before application outside of Pullman.

On a higher plane, Chang said the group is looking to promote green energy, sustainability and cleaner methods of power while helping people around the world.
