Prosecutors mull over possible charges Two football players are suspended indefinitely as they wait for possible theft charges. The Daily Evergreen Published: 06/18/2009 With six weeks into the WSU summer, the school’s football team was sacked with the second and third arrest of two football players, Tyree J. Toomer and LeAndre L. Daniels. In an alleged attempt to steal four bicycles from a storage area, Toomer, a sophomore, and Daniels, a redshirt freshman, were spotted by witnesses around 2:45 p.m. June 9 below Regents Residence Hall, said Lt. Steve Hansen of the WSU Police Department. Toomer and Daniels allegedly used a stolen hacksaw from a nearby construction site to free the bicycles from the bike rack. A construction worker at the site reported the incident. The two were suspended by the team indefinitely. “What drew the attention was to see one person pushing two bikes up a ramp,” said Hansen, who was one of four officers present at the scene of the alleged crime. Hansen said Toomer and Daniels were booked into the Whitman County Jail in Colfax pending an investigation of burglary and theft and were released the following day. He said the two individuals were booked for three felonies of residential burglary, burglary in the 2nd degree, 2nd degree theft and a gross misdemeanor. The case has been turned over to Whitman County Superior Court and prosecutors are of determining whether to charge the two players. “The players (were)suspended from team activities when they were arrested,” said Sports Information Director Bill Stevens. “The coaches will gather the facts and they’ll get the players’ side. Then they’ll take appropriate action if what was in the police report was valid.” When contacted, Daniels said he didn’t want to comment. “At this time, I’m not able to talk about this,” he said. “I’ll have to speak with the coaches.” Toomer was unavailable for comment. On Sunday, Head Coach Paul Wulff, who is entering his second year, addressed the matter in an interview with Q13 Fox Sports. “It’s a mistake and a poor choice by a couple young guys that have never been in trouble prior to Washington State or in their first year,” Wulff said. “Both have done very well academically as well. I think when it’s all said and done, there’s a question mark on whether the charges will even be filed.” Wulff also had a personal message to fans. “When kids make mistakes in Pullman, everyone’s gonna know about them,” he said. “But there’s a bright side to that. When you’re there as a student athlete, you’re a little bit of a rock star status as well. Things like this happen all the time in larger cities, and you just don’t find out about them because there’s so many other things going on.” |
