State to vote on R-71
The Washington state general election on Nov. 3 will decide several political issues.

A week from today, Washington state voters will decide the fate of Initiative 1033 and Referendum 71.

I-1033 is the Tim Eyman initiative that would limit growth of certain state, county and city revenue to annual inflation and population growth, with some exceptions. R-71 would expand state rights for senior domestic partners and same-sex couples to be equivalent to those of married spouses. The Nov. 3 general election will also end the race between Republican candidates Susan Fagan and Pat Hailey for the 9th District state representative. Whitman County has an all-mail-in ballot system. To register to vote, visit www.secstate.wa.gov/elections. Bryan E. Burke, executive director of Eastern Washington Voters, said this system has led to greater voter turnout in the Palouse. He also said the myth that young people hardly vote is not true in Whitman County. “I don’t think that (myth) is true at all,” he said. “At WSU, the voter registration is extremely high. At WSU – I swear – student registration is 70 to 80 percent.” Individuals who wish to register to vote can do so by accessing the Secretary of State online voter registration form at www.secstate.wa.gov/elections
