Cross country finishes at Pac-10s
WSU men’s cross country took sixth place at the Pac-10s, and the women finished 10th.

The WSU men’s cross country team finished sixth in the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Long Beach, Calif. The women’s team finished 10th.

The No. 26 ranked Cougar men’s team scored 163 points and was led by senior Mark Moeller, who finished 17th in the 8,000m race with a time of 23:39.0.

Other Cougars who scored in the race included senior Sam Ahlbeck who finished 26th with a time of 24:00.8, and sophomore Justin Englund who finished 38th with a time of 24:27.6. Freshman Andrew Kimpel finished 47th with a time of 24:42.3, and junior Dan Geib who finished 49th with a time of 24:44.9 to round out the scoring.

Cougar men competing out of the scoring were sophomore Jono Lafler who finished 57th with a time of 25:00.0, sophomore Peter Miller who finished 59th with a time of 25:04.5 and senior Dominic Smargiassi who finished 63rd with a time of 25:32.3.

Moeller’s 17th-place finish is the highest Pac-10 finish for a Cougar men’s runner since Danny Wolf’s ninth-place finish in 2004.

Stanford’s Chris Derrick won the individual competition for the No. 1 ranked team with a time of 22:35.0. Stanford won the eight-team race with 28 points.

The women’s team scored 251 points, behind the 24th-place finish by senior Lisa Egami with a time of 20:40.4 in the 6,000m race. The rest of the Cougars that scored in the race included senior Chelsea VanDeBrake who finished 47th with a time of 21:30.0, junior Amanda Andrews who finished 65th with a time of 21:59.3 and sophomore Emily Farrar who finished 70th with a time of 22:14.2. Junior Ashlee Wall was the last Cougar to score when she finished 76th with a time of 22:34.7.

Other Cougar women who competed, but did not score, included freshman Caroline Austin who finished 80th with a time of 22:56.1 and senior Marisa Sandoval who finished 83rd with a time of 23:24.8.

No. 1 Washington won the 10-team women’s race with 35 points. Oregon’s Nicole Blood was the individual winner with a time of 19:41.7.

The Cougar cross country team’s next competition will be on Nov. 14 at the NCAA West Region Championships at Springfield, Ore.
