It is time for Wulff to leave WSU football
Editor:

Embarrassing is not a strong enough word to describe the feeling my dad and I had while watching the WSU versus Notre Dame game on Halloween. It was certainly a fun evening of trick-or-treating for Notre Dame. There were sweets strewn all over the field in the form of the Cougar defense. Whether passing or running, Notre Dame could do no wrong and chomped off huge amounts of yardage on nearly every play. The Fighting Irish held the football for more than 40 minutes and made 33 first downs. The Cougar backfield played just as advertised – one of the worst in the nation. And the offense was not much better. Losing 40-14 exemplifies what we have come to expect under the Paul Wulff regime.

It is time for Wulff to stand up and face the music. He is not cut out to be a head coach. During his tenure, the Cougs have won just three football games and not in fine fashion. He has built a team that most certainly does not belong in the Pac-10. I thought that WSU Athletic Director Jim Sterk was attempting to take the football program in the right direction when he released Bill Doba. But what was Sterk thinking when he hired a replacement who only won half of his games? I am a graduate of WSU and proud to be a Cougar. But it is hard to maintain this Cougar pride in athletics with the direction the football program is headed – a direction that I hope is rectified in the near future.

Republicans are not making a resurgence
Editor:

It was interesting to see how William Stetson’s interpretation of the election going on in New York’s 23rd Congressional District was summarized as “Republicans gaining ground.” First of all, a Republican, John H. McHugh, was the last to hold the seat, having vacated it in September 2009. Therefore, it stretches the truth to call the special election of a New York Congressional seat, previously held by a Republican, “groundbreaking” Republican progress.

However, it was more appalling to see the dismissal of his own party’s candidate, a Republican moderate, in favor of someone endorsed by extremists who have publicly stated that they wish the current president of the United States to fail. Yes, we have reached the age where instead of allowing people to decide regional and federal interests on their own, people are allowing Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity, Michelle Malkin and others, who do not hold any current office, to tell them what to think instead.

Yet Stetson calls this groundbreaking. I, on the other hand, mourn the loss of a nation where independent, moderate-minded Americans cannot stand a chance against the big endorsements and possible monetary interests of conservative entertainers. Way to go, Stetson. Keep making America proud.
