Matt Baide The Daily Evergreen Published: 11/04/2009 The WSU women’s golf team finished its fall season in Onion Creek, Texas, with a 16th-place team finish and a final team score of 882(+42) in the Challenge at Onion Creek. The highest Cougar finisher in the tournament was freshman Ali Thompson, who continues to lead the Cougars in her first year at WSU. Thompson finished with a score of 214(+4), which earned her a tie for 15th place. Thompson shot rounds of 70(E), 69(-1) and 75(+5). Following Thompson, the next best Cougar finisher was fellow freshman Emma Betland, who finished with a three round total of 218(+8), good enough for a tie for 32nd place. Betland opened up with rounds of 71(+1) and 70(E) on the first day and finished with a 77(+7) on Tuesday. Redshirt junior Allison Travis had a career-low tournament, shooting a final score of 221(+11), which earned her a tie for 53rd place. Travis shot two rounds of 72(+2) on Monday before finishing up with a 77(+7) to round out her score. Sophomore Kristen Allard finished next for the Cougars, shooting a total score of 229(+19), which helped her grab a tie for 90th place. Rounding out the Cougar scores was freshman Ellen Park, shooting a total score of 253(+43) and 108th place. The 16th place finish was one spot ahead of No. 47 nationally ranked Missouri. Twenty-one teams competed at the Challenge at Onion Creek. The No. 24 Texas A&M Aggies won the event with a team score of 839(-1). The Aggies also had the top two individual finishers, Julia Boland who won with a 206(-4) and Ashley Freeman who shot a 207(-3) to secure second place. Out of 21 teams in the tournament, the Cougars headed into the final round of the tournament in ninth place but could not sustain the level of play they had in the first two rounds of play. WSU had a good fall season, seeing a lot of contribution from their younger players like Thompson and Betland. The team had its best finish at the Northwest Collegiate Classic, where the team finished in second place. The team had four top-10 team finishes out of five tournaments. The Cougars will start the spring season on March 1-3 at the Bruin/Wave Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif. |
