Like its characters, ‘Twilight’ sucks Even by American standards, ‘Twilight’ is little more than trash The Daily Evergreen Published: 11/09/2009 November used to be a month to look forward to. It was the beginning of the joyous holiday season, but now it is a month to dread because the new edition of the abominable “Twilight” series is hitting theaters. Never has a single form of American entertainment encapsulated the rise of shallowness and asininity in our country with as much ferocity. I remember the simpler times of the ‘90s, when we were drawn to the innocent romance of “Titanic” and the musical stylings of the Spice Girls. Now the big entertainment attraction features a girl who is essentially reduced to being a sexually attractive food item for a monster. Something went wrong. “Twilight” is not helping to convince American girls that the nice guy who is not going to slap his woman around is probably the way to go. Finding the central love story told in the “Twilight” series romantic is the equivalent of finding the Rihanna/Chris Brown ordeal romantic. The frightening message being portrayed here is it is sexy to be in danger. Watching the trailer for “New Moon” made me squirm in my chair. In one clip, Kristen Stewart’s Bella flails around in her bed because she is so distraught that her vampire lover Edward left her. This is a character that has no identifiable personality other than her absurd inability to be independent. She is every girl who is insecure without having a man around them at all times. Some women eat this material up as if it is some kind of revolutionary romantic phenomenon, even though it is unabashedly demeaning to them in every way. What I find particularly appalling about the “Twilight” phenomenon is that the series is no longer reserved for naïve little girls, who dream about falling in love every night. Mothers have also joined in, expressing their disgusting infatuation with a story that revolves around high school kids. At this point, I have to believe that middle-aged women who enjoy these childish fantasies have seriously disturbed psychological desires. It is no wonder that 35-year-old author Stephanie Meyer came up with the idea after a dream she had. It is hard to say what is more questionable: her inability to write a sentence above elementary level or that she dreamed about shirtless, sparkling teenage vampire boys. The Nov. 20 release date of “New Moon” suggests this is an epic holiday adventure to take the whole family to during Thanksgiving. Clearly, Summit Entertainment’s idea of family is daughter, mother and grandmother who all have the same attraction to underage Taylor Lautner. If “New Moon” is an even bigger success than its predecessor at the box office, it will be a clear sign of Americans’ diminishing taste, considering the first film was on par with a cheap and poorly written porno. It is perplexing to think that such a clearly corrupt story could find such universal appeal in America. This is the kind of entertainment that does no justice to any of its audience. Women adore it, despite the material’s blatant anti-feminist message. Men hate it because there is no violence whatsoever, except for the pain of listening to Robert Pattinson deliver a line. Nobody wins. The “Twilight” series represents books and movies that tell girls that it is acceptable to be with a man who treats them like meat. In other words, women are merely objects at the disposal of a potential wife beater. In the upcoming holiday season, which is supposed to be a time for family and joy, this is what America will be watching. |
