Swimming splits meets during trip to Arizona
Senior Michaela Ahlin broke a Wall Aquatic Center record in the 100-yard butterfly vs. NAU.

The WSU swim team had a busy weekend after winning in an exciting comeback against Northern Arizona on Friday but fell in Pac-10 competition the next day against Arizona State.

The Cougars trailed the entire match against Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz., until the final swim finished. WSU began its comeback in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle where they picked up 16 points, putting them in prime position to complete the rally.

The Cougars swept the top-three spots in the 100 breaststroke, with three Cougars in the top spots. Junior Talor Whitaker edged out teammates, senior Shawna Keller and sophomore Jessie Craig, to secure first place. Whitaker finished in 1:13.94, less than a second ahead of her two teammates.

Senior Michaela Ahlin set a Wall Aquatic Center record with a time of 1:03.52 in the 100-yard butterfly.

The meet came down to the final swim, the 200 freestyle relay, where the Cougars trailed by two points. The Cougars completed the comeback and emerged victorious, finishing the meet with a 149-142 point victory.

However, the Cougars did not have long to celebrate as they immediately continued on to face the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz.

The Cougars were not able to mount a comeback this time, falling to the Sun Devils 209-78.

Junior Rugile Mileisyte was the Cougars’ leading scorer against the Sun Devils, recording 13 points. Mileisyte was the only Cougar to record a win in the meet. She took first in the 50-yard freestyle.

Ahlin recorded three second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and the 100 and 200 butterfly, finishing with a total of 12 points.

Whitaker finished in third place on the team with six points in the meet.

The Cougars will return to the water Friday in Minneapolis when they participate in the Minnesota Grand Prix, starting at 7 a.m.
