Volleyball drops home matches The No. 24 Cougars dropped consecutive home matches for the first time this season.
The Daily Evergreen Published: 11/09/2009 The No. 24-ranked WSU volleyball game dropped matches to No. 5 ranked Stanford and No. 13 California before a whiteout home crowd in Bohler Gym. The Cougars (16-7 overall, 5-7 Pac-10) have now lost 14 straight against both the Cardinal and the Golden Bears and are facing a four-game slide, the longest of the season for WSU. “These two matches affect our mindset from a confidence standpoint,” Head Coach Andrew Palileo said after the Cougars dropped consecutive home matches for the first time this year. Stanford (16-7, 9-4) marched into the Palouse on Saturday night and bounced back from a Friday defeat at Washington with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 sweep of the Cougars. Senior Cassie Robbins turned in 12 kills to go along with six blocks, and fellow senior Jackie Albright helped WSU with 10 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Meagan Ganzer put up nine kills and five blocks, but the Cougars only managed a meager .108 hitting percentage. After the Cardinal owned the first set, WSU held early leads in both the second and third sets before failing to stave off Stanford’s comeback efforts. There were 2,134 fans dressed in white packed into Bohler Gym to watch WSU take on the Golden Bears on Friday night. California (14-8, 7-5) dominated the match, but the Cougars salvaged the third set, falling 16-25, 23-25, 25-23, 16-25. Junior Brittany Tillman hit .471 while racking up 11 kills and four blocks, and senior setter Renee Bordelon dished out 50 assists. Robbins cemented her spot in Cougar volleyball history by claiming 10th place all time on the career solo blocks list (44), and she also moving into the 10th spot for career total blocks (317). The Golden Bears jumped out and scored the first five points of the first set and hardly looked back. California hit an impressive .560 in the first set and stifled WSU’s attack, holding them to a .133 hitting percentage. Things did not get much easier for the Cougars in the second set, and the Golden Bears eventually broke a 21-21 tie to win the set and secure control of the match. The Cougars will hit the road and attempt to break the losing streak against another pair of ranked Pac-10 opponents, visiting No. 7 UCLA and No. 17 USC this weekend. |
