Rowing takes second in Seattle
WSU finished its fall season with a second-place finish for the varsity eight boat at the Head of the Lake Regatta in Seattle on Sunday.

The WSU women’s rowing team capped off its fall season with a second-place finish at the Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday.

After two wins over Gonzaga in the previous two weekends, the Cougar rowing team headed over to Seattle to compete in the biggest fall regatta west of the Mississippi River.

Hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club, the Head of the Lake Regatta has been around for 29 years. Racing in this year’s event were the University of Washington, WSU, Gonzaga, University of Minnesota, University of Victoria, Evergreen State, Seattle University and Oregon. The regatta typically brings out more than 2,500 rowers each year to Lake Union, the starting point of the race.

From Lake Union, the course extends east to the Montlake Cut through to Lake Washington and ends by UW’s Conibear Shellhouse. The course used for this year’s race is known as the “classic course,” because it is the most commonly raced course for the regatta.

The races began at 8 a.m. with the teams’ varsity eight boats facing one another. For the second year in a row, the WSU varsity eight placed second. Capturing first place in the race was the Huskies. WSU crossed the finish line eight seconds behind the Huskies and clocked a time of 17:49.64. After, the Cougars were Gonzaga, University of Victoria and Minnesota.

The WSU second varsity boat also placed second behind the Huskies with a time of 18:59.42.

The third varsity boat for the Cougars crossed the finish line first by a three second-margin over the Huskies’ boat. Their time was 18:56.64. The forth varsity boat came in third place with a time of 19:20.73.

The team will spend the winter season working out and getting ready for its spring season, which kicks off March 20. The team will begin racing at Wawawai Landing in the Class Day Races.
