WSU bows out of NCAAs with loss to Maryland WSU fell 1-0 to the Terrapins on Sunday after a 1-0 victory over Villanova on Friday.
The Daily Evergreen Published: 11/16/2009 The No. 14-ranked WSU women’s soccer team (13-5-2, 5-2-2 Pac-10) was eliminated from the NCAA tournament in the Round of 32 after falling to No. 19 Maryland 1-0 on Sunday in College Park, Md. The Cougars defeated the Villanova Wildcats 1-0 on Friday in the opening round of the tournament. The Cougars came out strong against the Terrapins, but Maryland’s Jasmyne Spencer scored the game’s only goal in the 33rd minute. The Terrapins won a corner kick, and after two Maryland players played the ball, it fell to Spencer who put it past junior goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo. WSU had a couple big chances to tie the game, but the Terrapin goalkeeper Mary Casey was able to make a couple saves to preserve the shutout. The first came in the 56th minute when redshirt junior midfielder Mallory Fox sent a header in off of a corner, and the second save came in the 78th minute when senior forward Kiersten Dallstream fired a shot in the right corner. Despite the 1-0 loss, WSU edged out Maryland 12-10 in shots, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. WSU also won seven corner kicks, while only conceding five. Dallstream put two of her three shots on goal before leaving the game with a broken collar bone. Against Villanova, the game started slow with no goals by other side in the first half, despite six shots by Villanova and four by WSU. In the second half, WSU continued to be outshot by Villanova, but in the 74th minute, Fox was able to capitalize on a cross into the box by senior defender Maggie Dougher. Senior midfielder Carly Dobratz was able to head the ball to Fox after the cross, who put the ball in the net after it deflected off the hands of the Wildcats’ goalkeeper, Molly Williams. Villanova outshot WSU 16-9, with a 10-5 advantage in the second half. Villanova edged out the Cougars 3-2 in corner kicks, all of which came in the second half. WSU finished the season with a 14-6-2 record, and the 14 wins tied the all-time record for the soccer team. The NCAA appearance was their second in a row, the first back-to-back appearance in team history. |
