Women's basketball adds three incoming freshmen
Incoming guard Sage Romberg is ranked in the top 100 in the country by two Web sites.

The WSU women’s basketball team added three new players to the roster Wednesday for the 2010-11 season.

“Our staff did another tremendous job of signing three phenomenal student-athletes,” Head Coach June Daugherty said in a WSU news release. “This is a very impressive class, and it is great to see us expand nationally. Recruits are contacting us more on a national level because of our first two classes.” Brandi Thomas is a 6-foot-1 guard from Elma. Thomas led Elma High School to a sixth-place state finish in 2007-2008 and a fourth-place finish in 2008-2009. Thomas earned the Evergreen Conference Co-Most Valuable Player and defensive player of the year awards as a junior in 2008-2009. Thomas holds the Elma High School record for most blocks in a season, blocks in a single game and a single game rebounding record.

Sage Romberg is a 6-foot-2 guard from Mckinleyville, Calif. Romberg is rated nationally at No. 73 by the All-Star Girls Report and is No. 87 in the HoopGurlz top 100. HoopGurlz rates Romberg as the nation’s 23rd-ranked shooting guard. Romberg has been the Humboldt Del Norte League Girls Basketball MVP the past three seasons.

Hana Potter, a 6-foot-2 forward from Edina, Minn., is the 43rd-ranked post, according to HoopGurlz. Potter led Hopkins High School to a third-place state finish as a freshman, made the all-tournament team during the Christmas Tournament and earned all conference accolades, while being voted the team’s most improved player.

“We are extremely excited for each of our three signees to join our program,” Daugherty said in a WSU news release. “They are phenomenal athletes, wonderful people and outstanding students. This is a program on the rise, and they will each play a key role in helping us achieve our program’s goals.” The Cougars posted a 64-54 win in their season opener against UC Davis.

The team will hit the road for a four-game road trip before its next home game against Saint Mary’s College on Dec. 3.
