Cougars host Oregon State Beavers on Senior Day Fifteen seniors will play in their final game at Martin Stadium when the Cougars host the Beavers on Saturday.
The Daily Evergreen Published: 11/20/2009 The 1-9 (0-7 Pac-10) WSU football team will host the No. 19-ranked Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, marking the completion of WSU football at Martin Stadium for 15 seniors who will be honored before kickoff as part of Senior Day. Looking to spoil the festivities are the Beavers, who are 7-3 (5-2 Pac-10) on the season. OSU has won three straight and is coming off a 48-21 win over the Washington Huskies last week. Oregon State is led by senior quarterback Sean Canfield, who is having a breakout season with 2,566 passing yards with 17 touchdowns and only five interceptions. “You know he’s played real well, and that’s been a difference for them this year with their ability to throw the ball,” Head Coach Paul Wulff said. “He’s had a very good year, and he’s done a great job.” The biggest offensive weapons the Beavers bring to the table are the Rodgers brothers, Jacquizz and James. Jacquizz leads the Beavers’ ground attack, tearing up run defenses for 1,148 yards and 17 touchdowns, which ranks second in the nation behind Stanford’s Toby Gerhart who has 19 scoring runs. His brother, James, who is a converted wide receiver, is leading the team with 831 yards and eight touchdowns on 71 receptions. “They’re special, talented guys,” Wulff said. “I think they’re 80 percent of their offense almost combined. It’s not going to be an easy game for us defensively.” Meanwhile for WSU, injuries continue to hinder the team’s ability to grow. In his teleconference on Thursday, Wulff provided an update on the injury report. Junior safety Chima Nwachukwu will sit out his third-straight game because of a sprained ankle, and redshirt freshman Jay Matthews will make his third consecutive start in relief of Nwachukwu. Wulff said he remains hopeful that Nwachukwu will be able to return in time to get ready for the Apple Cup against Washington next week. Redshirt senior defensive end Dan Spitz, who suffered a concussion last week against UCLA, has also been ruled out. Junior Casey Hamlett saw the majority of reps running with the first team in practice this week and could be lined up to start. Fellow redshirt freshman defensive tackle Bernard Wolfgramm has been suffering from back troubles the past few weeks. Wulff said he will be limited. Redshirt freshman Anthony Laurenzi is expected to start in place of Wolfgramm. Also, redshirt senior tight end Zack Tatman will start this week in place of redshirt senior Tony Thompson, who has yet to be cleared from a concussion he suffered in practice three weeks ago. Earlier this week, Chris Ball, assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator, went on Seattle’s KJR 950 AM sports radio and said the administration has put forth their support in the coaching staff, and they will be retained for next season. “We’ve had nothing but 100 percent support from everybody here,” Wulff said. “We’ve talked about it, and they know we’re doing all the right things. We’re bringing in great young players, and we’re making a lot of head way. We’ve got something special brewing. We really do.” After, the final home match with OSU, the WSUCougars will prepare for the Apple Cup on Nov. 28 in Seattle. |
