WSU falls to Beavers in final home game
The Cougars cut the lead to 21-10 at half but failed to score in the final two quarters.

The Oregon State Beavers traveled to Pullman on Nov. 21 for WSU’s Senior Day, coming away with a 42-10 victory over the Cougars.

Beaver quarterback Sean Canfield tore up the WSU defense for 231 yards and two touchdown strikes, keeping OSU’s Rose Bowl hopes intact.

Redshirt senior quarterback Kevin Lopina got the start for the Cougars, completing 15-22 passes for 133 yards but no touchdowns.

“I had fun,” Lopina said. “I still made some mistakes. Just had to knock the rust off here and there. But it was my last game in Martin (Stadium), and I just tried to play as hard as I could. I could have played a little smarter. I missed some quick throws on third downs. But for the most part, I felt like I was playing hard and competing.” Beaver running back Jacquizz Rodgers rushed for 165 yards and two touchdown scampers as well.

The Cougars were able to show some life late in the first half when the offense drove the ball down 80 yards in three minutes. Senior running back Dwight Tardy capped off the Cougar drive when he rushed for a 1-yard touchdown, cutting the Beaver lead to 21-10 going into halftime.

However, the Beavers added three more scores in the second half, giving the Cougars their second consecutive double-digit loss season.

“Being in a three-down front, there are a lot of challenges to that,” Head Coach Paul Wulff said. “I thought our linebackers did a good job and played hard. Some of their scores were later in the game, but it was a tight ball game through the third quarter.”
