Amateur boxers go at it for charity
Fight Night will feature boxing matches and free T-shirts for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

WSU students are getting ready to battle in the second annual Pullman Fight Night at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Gladish Gym.

Delta Sigma Pi and the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality are hosting the fundraiser. The proceeds go to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Tickets are on sale from 10 to 2 p.m. Friday in the CUB for $10. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $12.

Events at Fight Night include official amateur boxing matches, free demonstrations and merchandise for EA Sports' new video game, "Fight Night Round 4," a beer garden sponsored by The Coug bar, music and a raffle for Muhammad Ali signature boxing equipment.

Jessica Feller, a junior management and operations major and president of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, said the first Pullman Fight Night was successful last year. She is hoping for even more success this year.

"It’s a fun event for us,” she said. "We hope everyone comes.” Feller said many students don’t realize that Pullman Fight Night is a legitimate amateur boxing match with referees, medics and ring girls. Monica Lambert, a junior hospitality business management major, said the event gives students something new and exciting to look forward to on campus.

"We wanted, first off, to raise money for St. Jude’s,” she said. "And we wanted to put on a fun and different event from anything else offered here at WSU. It’s a different event to go to on a Saturday night here in Pullman.” Lambert said competitors in the boxing matches include WSU and University of Idaho students who applied months ago. These students are registered with amateur boxing licenses, and there will be fighters from a Spokane boxing club.

Lambert said she’s looking forward to a good turnout.

"We are pretty positive it will be successful,” she said.

Colin McElroy, a senior communication major, will be acting as the student representative for EA Sports' "Fight Night Round 4" on Saturday.

He said there will be free T-shirts and game giveaways.

"I hope it goes well,” he said. "I’ve been hearing some things around campus. People seem excited about it.”
