Basketball teams help at final PB&J Club
Players and coaches from both the men’s and women’s teams handed out food and prizes.

Opposing Pac-10 coaches have deemed WSU students as the loudest, craziest fans to play against, WSU women’s basketball coach June Daugherty said at ASWSU’s final PB&J club meeting on Wednesday.

Coaches, staff members and players from both the men and women’s basketball teams served peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to a crowd of hungry students at the event, which also provided prizes and entertainment.

After finishing their sandwiches, students could participate in an 8-foot inflatable basketball game against one of the basketball players. T-shirts, basketballs and Cougar spirit gear prizes were given out to students who won the “shoot off.” Scott Shigeoka, ASWSU director of Campus Relations, said 300 to 400 people usually come to the PB&J Club events, which highlight WSU athletics, student groups and academic departments.

“The whole reason why we have PB&J Club is so that the students can not only get a free sandwich and fill their stomachs, but also so that they can see people, like the men and women’s basketball teams and coaches, right up in their faces,” he said.

In addition to passing out sandwiches, redshirt freshman forward James Watson handed out prizes to students who won in the hoops contest.

“I just like to have fun and see the smiles on everyone’s faces when they are eating their peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,” Watson said.

Like Watson, redshirt sophomore forward Abe Lodwick said the event was a great way to give back to the fans.

“I know they do (this event) regularly, but to have us here shows that we appreciate all the support they give us,” Lodwick said.

As she addressed the crowd, Daugherty also emphasized her appreciation of all the WSU fans.

“I know a lot of you guys come to our games in the ZZU CRU section,” Daugherty said. “We just want to tell you guys how much we appreciate you.” Daugherty said she hopes all fans will come out and cheer on both of the basketball teams this year.

“We’re really excited that we’re in our preseason,” she said. “We have a very young, very talented team. Ninety percent of our players are freshmen and sophomores, and they can flat out play.” Sophomore Michael Silvas is one Cougar fan who hasn’t missed a single PB&J Wednesday all year.

“I love PB&J,” Silvas said. “I actually plan my schedule to make sure I have Wednesdays at noon off. I’m like, I can’t take that class because it’s during PB&J time.” Senior communication major Ashley Gustin got to pick out a prize at the event after beating sophomore forward DeAngelo Casto in a shoot off. She said it was fun to beat someone who plays on the basketball team.

“It was a good thing he wasn’t standing up, I don’t think I would have stood a chance,” Gustin said. “I’m pretty sure he let me win, but that’s OK because I like free stuff.” Gustin said she enjoyed seeing members from both the men’s and women’s basketball team participate in the PB&J Club event.

“It’s really nice when the athletes come out and interact with the students,” Gustin said. “It’s always great to see.”
