Students blow off some steam “Destressfest” provides students an opportunity to have one last hurrah before finals. The Daily Evergreen Published: 12/14/2009 Stress relief from finals and dead week provided the theme for Friday’s Up All Night in the CUB. The Student Entertainment Board puts on a stress-related UAN, Destressfest, on the Friday before finals week every semester. “They’re usually really well attended,” SEB Director Renae Dahlquist said. “People like the opportunity to do something fun before finals start because, during Dead Week, we’re already going crazy studying and doing all of these homework assignments. It’s really nice to just be able to come for a couple of hours and just relax, hang out with your friends, get some free food – everyone likes that.” SEB served tomato soup, grilled cheese sandwiches and hot chocolate. Calming activities included 10-minute massages and cardio and yoga classes, which took place in the CUB Senior Ballroom. Both were free and set up by the Rec Center. Also in the Senior Ballroom were country swing dance lessons provided by the Residence Hall Association and the National Residence Hall Honorary. Junior communication major Matthew Scott Kottong from NRHH said they chose to give the lessons at Destressfest because it’s fun and easy to learn. “We had a lot of people come who already know how to dance, and a lot of people who are just learning and a lot of people who want to advance their knowledge as far as swing dance goes,” he said. Bullet Proof Tattoos, based in Spokane, provided piercings for a reduced price of $20 each in the Junior Ballroom. The movie playing in Todd Auditorium was “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Meanwhile, Comedian Jeff Dye hosted an acoustic battle of the bands competition in the CUB Auditorium. On the first floor of the CUB, students could have their pictures taken with Butch T. Cougar dressed as Santa Claus. There were also video games and mug decorating available. Due to the high attendance, some students couldn’t participate in all of the activities. “It’s a little disappointing – I’m not going to lie,” senior elementary education major Maggie Chia said. “We came here for some fun stuff, but they ran out of bags, and they ran out of mugs, and we didn’t even get piercings.” SEB ran out of all 300 mugs within the first 15 minutes, Dahlquist said. Freshman communication major Chelsea Mickelson decorated a mug and said she enjoyed “Destressfest” because stress is a problem among the students at this time of year. “I know so many kids who, even during dead week, have pulled all nighters,” Mickelson said. “I luckily haven’t yet, but there are so many people out there that just need a reminder to relax. Zombies can’t pass finals.” |
