Sun Devils dominate the Cougars WSU shot just 29.6 percent from the field while the Sun Devils shot better than 50 percent. The Daily Evergreen Published: 01/11/2010 Both the men and women’s basketball teams couldn’t stop the Arizona State Sun Devils this weekend as the men suffered their biggest loss of the season, 71-46. The 46-point showing from the Cougars was considered routine during former Head Coach Tony Bennett’s era, but it is the lowest point total for WSU under new Head Coach Ken Bone. WSU struggled from the floor the entire game, shooting just 29.6 percent. On the other hand, the Sun Devils were red hot, shooting 50.8 percent for the game and more than 56 percent in the second half. ASU’s defense played well the entire game by holding all Cougars into single-digit scoring. Sophomore guard Klay Thompson, one of the nation’s top scorers by averaging 23.9 points per game, was held to only 9 points with 3-11 shooting. “I just didn’t hit shots,” Thompson said. WSU came out of the gate hot and jumped out to a 7-1 lead. After a timeout, the Sun Devils ran off to a 16-0 run to take the lead for good. ASU’s run was helped greatly by four Cougar turnovers. Though ASU dominated the majority of the first half, the Cougars limited the damage and were only down 33-25 going into the break. However, ASU continued to increase their lead in the second half and outscored the Cougars 38-21 in the final 20 minutes. “ASU played well, and we didn’t,” Bone said following his team’s defeat. ASU’s Ty Abbott led all scorers with 17 points and also recorded 11 rebounds to complete a double-double. The Cougars are now 12-4 and have a 2-2 conference record, which has them sitting at fourth in the standings. They look to bounce back this week while hosting California and Stanford. |
