WSU offers guidelines for Haiti donations

The university continues to help WSU community members who wish to donate toward relief efforts in Haiti.

WSU announced Thursday that its Combined Fund Drive will now provide a list of service organizations for WSU employees who wish to donate. They can also donate through the CFD's Web site, http://cfd.wsu.edu.

Also on Thursday, a WSU official warned community members and organizations, including RSOs, against trying to collect material goods to send to Haiti.

In an e-mail to The Daily Evergreen, Christopher Tapfer, the WSU emergency management coordinator, said material goods such as food, water and clothing often lead to a logistical nightmare in disaster areas.

He strongly discourages such donations. Also, he said people should not travel to Haiti unless they're part of an established humanitarian or relief organization that has infrastructure in place to support them.

Tapfer said the best way to help Haiti is to collect and donate money to the charitable organization of your choice. Once Haiti has its basic needs met and some infrastructure rebuilt, then other donations may be more appropriate in the years to come.

Members of the WSU community can also donate to Haiti through the WSU Foundation.

Those who wish to make donations can do so at http://wsufoundation.wsu.edu/giving/ or send them to the WSU Foundation at P.O. Box 641925 in Pullman.

WSU has also put together several videos with WSU professors discussing the earthquake, including the engineering perspective on how Haiti can rebuild and what would happen if a similar earthquake happened here. Those are available at wsunews.wsu.edu.
