Veteran Huskies outlast women in overtime The Cougars sent the game into overtime but were unable to hold off their cross state rivals. The Daily Evergreen Published: 02/01/2010 The women's basketball version of the Apple Cup was a hard-fought battle, but WSU lost in a close overtime game, 76-70. “The crowd that showed up was awesome," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "It is tough to lose in overtime because of a mistake or two. I had no issues with the effort from our ball club tonight.” Sophomore guard April Cook led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points. Freshman guard KiKi Moore pitched in 15 points of her own, and sophomore guard Jazmine Perkins added 13 points. The first half of the game was very back and forth. The Cougars had largest lead of the half and went into halftime ahead, 34-29. However, the Huskies came out and scored 7 straight points to take the lead early in the half. Both teams then swapped leads throughout the second half, but neither team was unable to break away. With three minutes to go, the Cougars took the lead 58-57 on a three pointer from Perkins. Perkins made two free throws with 2:21 left to put WSU up by 3 points. The Huskies came back and took the lead with a minute left. A free throw moved their lead up to 62-60. With 21 seconds left, WSU took the ball down the court, and Moore dished the ball to redshirt junior forward Katie Madison who made a lay-in to tie the game at 62. Washington had two chances at the end of the game, but missed both to send the game into overtime. During overtime, the Huskies jumped out to a quick lead. The Cougars battled back to tie the game at 68 with 2:14 left. The Huskies took a 2-point lead at the 1:42 mark. A turnover and a missed three-point attempt were all the Cougars could muster as UW sealed the victory. WSU falls to 5-15 and 0-9 in Pac-10 play. They are currently on a 10-game losing streak. “We are going to get ready to get back in the gym and get back after it to get the next win,” Perkins said. Washington improved to 9-10 and 4-5 in Pac-10 play. “We were excited before the game and the crowd really gave us energy tonight," Cook said. "Now we need to get ready for Arizona.” WSU will look to end its losing streak when they go on the road for the first time in two weeks when they head to Arizona. They will take on the Wildcats at 6 p.m. Thursday. The team will follow that up with a game against ASU at 12 p.m. Saturday.
