Women get first conference victory
Sophomore April Cook scored a career high 33 points against Arizona State in a win Saturday.

The women’s basketball team earned their first Pac-10 win in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday night.

Sophomore guard April Cook scored a career-high 33 points against the Arizona State Sun Devils as the Cougars won 66-62.

“Our defense really wrecked havoc,” WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said in a WSU press release. “We chipped away at the lead, we stayed poised and we finally broke through for the win.” The victory ended a 10-game, Pac-10 losing streak and 11-game overall losing streak. It was also the first road victory against the Sun Devils in 13 years.

Cook’s 33 points is the ninth-best, single game scoring performance in school history. Freshman guard KiKi Moore added 16 points and five assists. Sophomore guard Jazmine Perkins had five steals, and freshman center Carly Noyes had six rebounds.

WSU committed 20 turnovers in the first half and also didn’t score for more than eight minutes. Even with the mistakes, WSU went into the half only down 29-26.

The second half opened with the Cougars cutting ASU’s lead to 1 point, but the Sun Devils maintained their lead for the first 10 minutes of the half.

With the Sun Devils up 44-37 with 10:12 remaining in the game, WSU went on an 8-0 run to take the lead at 45-44.

The Sun Devils tied it at 48, but the Cougars pushed their lead out to 59-52. WSU’s defense took over down the stretch to nab the win.

WSU improved to 6-16 on the season and 1-10 in the Pac-10. ASU dropped to 14-8 overall and 6-5 in the Pac-10.

WSU returns home this weekend to face California on Thursday. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Friel Court. And then, No. 2 Stanford comes into town on Saturday to play the Cougars. Game time against the Cardinal is set for noon.
