Track has big performances in Idaho Pole vaulter Kendall Mays punched her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. The Daily Evergreen Published: 02/08/2010 The Cougar track and field team had a busy weekend. Luckily, the team had two meets that were both short road trips to Moscow. On Friday, the Cougars competed in the 35th Annual Vandals Indoor meet and participated in the Runners Soul Meet on Satudray. Both events were in University of Idaho’s indoor track facilities at Kibbie Dome. On Friday, there were some impressive performances. Pole vaulter Kendall Mays not only won the meet in her event but also reached an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with her vault of 13-4 1/4. The women’s 60-meter dash saw tight WSU competition. Freshman heptathlete Jasmine Johnson-McKeown won with a time of 7.69 seconds and a lifetime best. Right behind her was freshman Cindy Robinson who took second place with a time of 7.71 seconds, a new personal record. Johnson-McKeown also won the discus event with a throw of 158-8. Senior sprinter Princess Joy-Griffey and Robinson took first and second in the 200-meter dash. Griffey ran a 24.39 mark, while Robinson came in with a time of 25.02 seconds. The 4x400-meter women’s relay team crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 3:15.20. The team consists of Veronica Elseroad-Wall, Brittnay Crabb, Jacki Hill and Caroline Hedel. The WSU men also produced some winning marks at the Vandals Indoor Open meet. Sophomore David Hickerson ran a time of 1:54.35 minutes in the 800-meter run, good enough to collect the top spot over other competition. Dominic Smargiassi won the mile run with a new personal record of 4:17.15. The men’s team comprised of McCann Wesley, Dana Wells, Joe Abbott and Jason Stoker won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:20.28. On Saturday, the Runners Soul Indoor Meet featured many new personal bests by Cougar athletes. The first new personal record setter came in the 60-meter dash on the women’s side. Sophomore Morgan Clem ran a 7.75 second time, which beat her previous personal record of 7.80 seconds and beat the competition by a full tenth of a second. Robinson took first place in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 25.12 seconds. She also finished the day with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a 7.89 second time. Crabb took first in the women’s 400-meter dash by a hair, beating the second place finisher by .01 seconds with a time of 58.22. Anna Layman ran a time of 5:04.12 in the women’s 800-meter run. Her time was good enough to place her third in competition. Devin Brooks, Jalisa Williams and Shaquana Logan took first, second and third in the women’s 60-meter hurdles. Brooks ran for a time of 8.77 seconds while Williams posted 8.89 and Logan ran for a time of 8.91. The men’s team only sent a few athletes to compete. McCann ran for a second place finish and a time of 22.36, which was a new personal record. The men’s 4x400-meter relay team took first place with a time of 3:24.23. The team consisted of Ezra John Griffey, Andre Jennings, McCann and Wells. Next up for the Cougar track and field team will be competition this Saturday. |
