Girls get a night to focus on self
Women get together to listen to speakers relate experiences of sex, alcohol and religion.

Singer-songwriter Jourdan Burks and Marian Jordan, author of “Sex and the City Uncovered,” spoke about sexual assault, alcohol and religion in the CUB Auditorium Thursday night.

Girls Night Out, an event only women could attend was planned by Panhellenic, Redeemed Girl Ministries and Resonate Church from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

More than 180 women attended.

Freshman English and secondary education major Courtney Schumacher attended the event to meet requirements for her sorority.

“I didn’t really know what it was going to be about,” she said. “I really related to the speaker’s (Jordan) stories.” The event is open to all women, but Greek women had priority in seating because of the multiple community requirements it met, said Dominique Mesick, the vice president of programming and development.

“It focused on development for a wholesome purpose,” she said. “I think it went really well.” Cookies and non-alcoholic drinks were served, and door prizes such as gift cards for coffee and haircuts were raffled off at the end of the event.

Before Jordan was finished sharing her experiences with sex, alcohol and religion, she gave the audience an opportunity to leave early and still get credit from their sorority for attending the event.

Everyone stayed for the rest of the event, said Jane Owen, an intern for Resonate from Texas, who helped plan and run the event.

“It was encouraging to relate and listen to the beautiful women who spoke,” she said. “They are very passionate about what they do.” After the event, Burks and Jordan met and spoke with audience members.

Jordan is the author of three books, and Resonate might have a book club for them, Owen said.

“Marian is well known in Oklahoma and Texas for sharing her stories and helping young women,” she said. “It was exciting to have a fellow Texan here.” Burks plans on staying in the area this week to take part in Resonate’s gatherings.
