Swimming drops last dual meet of the season Swim team could not overcome the early point deficit received for surrendering diving events. The Daily Evergreen Published: 02/08/2010 The WSU swim team dropped its last dual meet of the season at Idaho on Saturday, 108-123. The Cougars started out with their backs against the wall after surrendering the two diving events to the Vandals, but they made up ground in the 11 swimming races to turn it into a close meet. Senior Michaela Ahlin displayed veteran leadership, winning two individual races. Junior Talor Whitaker and Ahlin each racked up 18 individual points to pace WSU. Ahlin cruised to a victory in the 200 individual medley (2:07.08), touching three seconds ahead of second place finisher, Idaho’s Kelsie Saxe. She later spearheaded a Cougar sweep of the top three spots in the 200 butterfly, winning with a time of 2:06.05. Sophomore Rachael Krager edged out freshman teammate Breezy Gonzales for the second spot by less than a second. Whitaker swam her fastest 200 freestyle of the season, winning the race in 1:53.44. She also took home the 100 freestyle (52.08) by narrowly besting junior teammate Rugile Mileisyte for first place. Sophomore Danielle Palumbo notched a season best time in the 200 backstroke (2:07.37), while junior Jennifer Dean had a season best mark in the 500 freestyle (10:44.32). WSU will now focus on resting and preparing for the Pac-10 Championships, which will be held from Feb 24 to 27 in Long Beach, Calif. The Cougars finished in ninth place at the Conference Championships last year but broke 13 school records and boasted 64 lifetime best swims. |
