Police host sobriety forum
WSU police invite students to pour into the CUB Lounge to learn about alcohol safety issues.

The WSU Police Advisory Board will demonstrate live field sobriety tests from 4 to 5 p.m. today in the CUB Lounge.

At the event, "Field Sobriety Tests: The Sobering Truths," WSU Police will administer measured amounts of alcohol to police interns and discuss the procedures and safety issues surrounding DUIs. “The focus of the forum is to provide students with a true-life visual of how alcohol, even in small amounts, can impair a person and how the police handle such situations,” board chairwoman Kim Barrett said. The alcohol will be administered before the event, but there will be a pouring demonstration to show how many drinks the interns had. The event is part of a series of three spring semester forums about WSU policing and student life. Each will include a Q-and-A.

“I think it’s interesting that they are giving students the opportunity to learn how to stay out of trouble because, let’s be honest, people can get in trouble more if they don’t know their rights,” said Claire Susz, a junior criminal justice major. “They could get taken advantage of.” The forums are an opportunity for communication and education between students and police, Barrett said.

“These forums provide a space for students and police to talk honestly and openly about the forum issues,” she said. “It’s important for students to know that the priority of the police is not to hand out a bunch of MIPs or ruin everyone’s fun, but to make sure everyone is safe.” Mohammed Buzaid, a sophomore chemical engineering major, said it would be beneficial for the police and the community to build a better relationship.

“Everyone hear(s) complains about the police,” he said. “A lot of students have questions about what the police actually do.” The second forum in the series, "Reporting Assaults: Breaking the Culture of Silence", will take place March 9. The third, "Discussion and Panel: Truth and Consequences," will take place April 13.

“If students want to get the inside answers on something, these forums are the place to come and ask questions," Barrett said.
