Women look to win another Pac-10 game WSU plays host to California and No. 2 Stanford as they look to continue improving their record. The Daily Evergreen Published: 02/12/2010 The WSU women’s basketball team has a tough test this weekend as the California Golden Bears and the Stanford Cardinal make their way to Pullman. Game time is set for 6 p.m. tonight at Friel Court. “To beat Cal, we are going to have to be more and more aggressive,” Head Coach June Daugherty said. “We need to force them out of their comfort zone.” The Cougars (6-16, 1-10) will be looking for their second-straight Pac-10 win. The women snapped an 11-game losing streak, 10 of which were in conference, last Saturday against Arizona State. “We got to the rim against ASU’s pressure,” Daugherty said. “Our defense was good, and we forced 29 turnovers. We need to build on ASU, on offense and on defense.” The California Golden Bears (12-10, 6-5) have struggled as of late, losing two of their last three after winning five straight. The last meeting between the Golden Bears and the Cougars was on Jan. 16 when the Cougars lost 75-68 on the road. The Cougars have lost the last 10 meetings with California and are 19-34 all time. Although they have struggled against Cal, WSU will look to add to its winning record in Pullman (14-11). The team’s last victory in the series came Jan. 27, 2005, when the Cougars won 79-69. Sophomore guard April Cook scored 33 points against Arizona State, which was the ninth highest point tally a single game i the history of WSU women’s basketball. “They didn’t pressure me. They just sat back,” Cook said. “It helped me make a lot of shots.” This performance earned Cook the Pac-10 women’s basketball player of the week for Feb. 1 to 8. Cook is the second Cougar to win the award in the last 13 years. “When you look at the people who have won that honor, it is crazy to be named with them,” she said. “I got excited when I heard about it.” The Cougars will finish the weekend with a game against No. 2 Stanford. Daugherty is looking forward to the challenge that such a highly ranked team will bring. “The higher, the better,” Daugherty said. “You work for this game all year, and it is exciting as a coach.” The game also doubles as WSU’s “pink zone” game. WSU’s pink zone game is to raise support and awareness for breast cancer. Fans are asked to show up to the game wearing pink. Those wearing pink will pay $2 for admission. The first 250 fans will receive a special WSU women’s basketball “Pink Out” T-shirt. The game against the Cardinal is set for noon Sunday at Friel Court. |
