Student may have stolen identity WSU student allegedly used a friend’s CougarCard to seek medical attention.
The Daily Evergreen Published: 03/22/2010 UPDATE: Topsanna Littlestar's case was resolved with a guilty plea in July to one gross-misdemeanor charge of second-degree attempted theft, Whitman County Prosecutor Denis Tracy said Monday. Topsanna Littlestar, 21, was charged with second-degree identity theft in Whitman County Superior Court on June 8, according to public court records obtained by The Daily Evergreen. Second-degree identity theft is a class C felony with a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. According to a police report, WSU Police Officer Dawn Daniels responded to Health and Wellness Services on May 12 to look into a possible identity theft that occurred the previous week. According to the report, Littlestar and the alleged victim had a falling out before the incident took place. On May 13, Daniels called Littlestar in for questioning. According to the report, Littlestar did not have medical insurance and admitted to using another student's CougarCard. She said she had permission to use the card. According to the report, the victim contacted Daniels and said she had not given permission for Littlestar to use her ID number or Cougar Card. Later that day, Daniels sent a text message to Littlestar asking her to come in for more questioning and to search her cell phone. According to the report, Littlestar initially agreed but later texted, “My attorney has advised me to no longer communicate with you or anyone on campus … I will not be bringing in my phone." Daniels went to Littlestar’s apartment in Pullman to arrest her because she was worried Littlestar may leave town, according to the report. Daniels applied for a search warrant for the house and found marijuana and paraphernalia in the apartment. Littlestar was originally booked on identity theft, second-degree theft and second-degree perjury. A search warrant for Littlestar’s phone revealed a conversation between Littlestar and the victim on May 13 that confirmed Littlestar used the ID number without permission. "So you told them u didn't give me permission?!," Littlestar texted. “Well i didn’t.. Were you under the impression i did? This really has nothing to do with me im sorry to say you did this to yourself,” the victim texted Littlestar. Littlestar told The Daily Evergreen that no court date has been set. She said her lawyer is still in talks with the prosecutor. “This case is not resolved," she said in an e-mail. "I have a lawyer and am still going to court." |
