International students perform for their peers
Students showed off their talent in the CUB Lair Thursday for International Education Week.

Performers from across the world all over the world danced, sang and played instruments, sharing small pieces of their cultures during the International Registered Students Organizations performances Thursday in the CUB Lair.

“The students have done an excellent job,” said Ben Colston, International Center coordinator. “They were very enjoyable and educational at the same time.” This event was part of the International Education Week. Colston said having done it in the CUB was a very good decision to expose students to these performances, because otherwise, students might not actually have gone to see these kind of events on their own. However, many students said they enjoyed the performances they got to see. They stopped by when they saw what was going on in the Lair.

“I thought the performances were really cool,” senior communication major Sarah Wright said. “They showed all the different cultures around the world that we don’t necessarily get to see here in a small town like Pullman.” Wright studied abroad in Kenya last semester. She said she liked the two African performances made by students of the African Friendship Association. She said she really wanted to go to the African Night on Saturday, but she already has plans with her mom this weekend.

The International Student Council decided to do the International Education Week during the spring because of the time it takes to organize and coordinate this type of events, Colston said. Peer mentor Sai Rong, who has been a council member since last year, said she was happy because all the events went out more successfully than the last time.

The ISC wanted to involve all the international students’ organizations. The ISC is hosting African and Korean nights, showing a Turkish movie as well as Taiwan and Vietnam information sessions. They will also serve international cuisine this afternoon at the International Students Center.

“We’ve opened the eyes of a lot of students here to different cultures,” Peer Mentor Samantha Taylor said. “(ISC) is just trying to give a taste of culture to the campus so they can get an idea of what international students have to offer.” For more information about the International Education Week’s schedule, visit the International Center Web site, http://www.ip.wsu.edu/intlcenter/calendar/.
