Lefty steals the show in Augusta
Both Mickelson’s wife and mother are battling breast cancer

The theme during the final round at the Masters was the same as it was during the opening tee shots.

Only it’s a different face.

The week leading up to the Masters was all about whether or not a certain top five golfer’s family troubles would hold him back. The theme could have been applied to two golfers, but the spotlight was only on one.

Coming in, Tiger Woods and his family troubles took center stage and was the dominating theme through the first 54 holes.

But the final 18 was all about Phil Mickelson. In the past year, Mickelson’s wife and mother have both been diagnosed with breast cancer, and both are still fighting the disease.

The grueling 12 months he’s endured, which when actually looked at makes Tiger’s life look trivial – especially considering Mickelson has no control over what happened to him.

“It’s been an amazing week,” said Mickelson after it was all said and done. “This has been a very special day. To have Amy and my kids here to share it with, I can’t put it into words.

The Masters marked the first time Mickelson’s wife had been on hand to watch her husband place since she was diagnosed. It was also his first win and first top five finish of the year.

“We’ve been through a lot this year, and it means a lot to share some joy together,” he said. “She’s an incredible wife and incredible mother and has been an inspiration for me this past year, seeing what she’s been through. To cap it off with this victory, I can’t put it into words, but it’s something we’ll share and remember the rest of our lives.” Mickelson came into the final round down one stroke to Lee Westwood and turned in a second-consecutive 67 to take a three-stroke victory.

Somewhat hidden by the sight of Mickelson embracing his wife after he won is the brilliance of one particular shot by the left-hander.

After a horrific tee shot that landed in a group of trees to the right of the fairway on the par-5 No. 13, Mickelson found himself 207 yards away from the pin.

Placed in between two trees and only a narrow window to work with, Mickelson swung for the green with a dangerous creek separating Mickelson and his intended target. The conventional move would be to lay up and hit a third shot to reach the green.

Mickelson swung away and put the ball within three feet of the hole.

It was the shot of his life and made people forget about his equally impressive eagle-eagle-birdie Saturday.

With his wife on hand, Mickelson dominated the field and took control of the headlines from his rival Tiger, who’s wife was probably as far away from Augusta as possible.

In the end, it was Mickelson who took back the limelight and helped people forget about Tiger, something everyone was probably hoping for in the first place.
