The fans did their part and now it's time for WSU women's basketball coach Sherri Murrell to do hers.
Before Saturday's game, Murrell said she would write a check for $1,000 to a local charity if 1,000 fans showed up for the game. The 1,360 fans who showed up to see the Huskies play the Cougars was the largest crowd to witness a women's basketball home game in 11 years.
Two days after the game, Murrell has made her choice. She will write the check to the Breast Cancer Support Group of the Palouse, a local organization also known as the Bosom Buddies.
"I chose Bosom Buddies because of the positive influence it has on the lives of people affected by breast cancer," Murrell said. "I personally know how it helped Nancy Wexler, a fifth-generation Pullman resident and a staunch Cougar supporter. I hope the donation can help others like her in Pullman."
The Breast Cancer Support Group of the Palouse was founded in March 1995. Its mission is to support and enhance the well-being of anyone with a personal history of breast cancer and educate the community about the illness and its possible treatments. The group participates in projects to educate the community about breast cancer, its treatments and the challenges of life after breast cancer.
"We think it's wonderful," said Nancy Wexler, the treasurer of the orgnization, said. "It will be put to good use in the community and won't be just used for research."
Wexler, a breast cancer survivor herself, accepted the check on behalf of the organization Monday.
